Public Service University!

Marshal was our neighbor in Pasadena–he’s a great writer (he currently writes for the Las Vegas Sun) and a great guy. This came from him:

Dear friends and family,

It’s my honor to tell you about an exciting proposal before Congress to
create the nation’s first undergraduate university for civilians — the
United States Public Service Academy. I don’t usually advocate or endorse
these kind of things, but I’m asking you to consider the merits of this
effort and do what you can to join it. I promise you’ll find it interesting
and inspiring.

The Academy needs to be created by Congress, so Shawn and Chris have been
urging Senators and Representatives to endorse the deal. This is a grass
roots effort in the most authentic sense. They’ve spent their own money to
troll the halls of Washington DC, pitching their idea. In just over a year
they’ve had astounding success.

I’m writing you because this is truly a movement of every day people who
want to do something positive for America. It’s also a bipartisan effort
where conservatives and liberals, the secular and the religious, can agree
that selfless service should be taught to our young people. There’s no big
money, lobbying groups, special interests or publicity firms behind this
proposal. It’s just a good idea, and in America that still counts for
something.

This big idea will never come to fruition unless people like us join the
effort to whatever degree we’re able. I’m asking you to do what I’ve done –
sign the petition on the Academy website showing your support for the idea.
This is a minimal commitment, takes no time at all, and you can even do so
anonymously if you wish. You can find the petition on the website:
www.uspublicserviceacademy.org.

If you’d like to do more, there’s plenty of information on the website,
including their detailed proposal. To advocate more I suggest you contact
your local Congressional representatives in the House and Senate. Let me
know if you need help finding their contact info and I’d be happy to provide
it to you. The bills need more sponsors from both sides of the aisle.
Politicians need to hear from Americans who think this is a good idea. Like
I said, there’s no big campaign that’s going to do it. This needs to be done
by people like you and me.

Grace and peace,
Marshall
