Hey Friends – if you have talked with me in the last couple months, I might have told you about the family apartment business that Amy and I started with my Dad, Christy (sister) & Will (sister’s hubby).  We bought a house in Northeast Minneapolis – an old house divided into 3 apartments – and I’ve been spending my after hours for the last couple months rocking out some paint, carpet, toilets, faucets, lights, and smoke alarms (yay for safety).

So where is this place?  I’m glad you asked!  It’s right in the heart of Northeast Minneapolis on Central Ave just north of Broadway.  If you’ve been to the Ideal Diner – you were just two doors down from our place!

So what’s the deal?

Ok, so now that we have fresh painted walls, new carpet, new faucets, and some rockin’ smoke alarms, we’re actually ready to offer these places up for rent!  But we’d like to rent to people who don’t suck.  And in exchange for being non-sucky tenants, we will promise to be non-sucky landlords (more like land-friends).  So I’m turning to you!  If you found this post, you probably know me or my family, or know someone who does.  So here are some ways you can do us a solid and help find some Northeast Super-Stars:

What are the apartments like? How Much?

We’re going to post these on craigslist too – but for more money.  These are the awesome prices, so if when you call and ask make sure you say that you saw my blog post! Amy posted some pictures of the units here. Here is the rundown:

2 Bedroom+, 1 Bath – Lower Unit – $900

There actually is a 3rd Bedroom but it’s really small so we’re going with 2+. But we’ll accept medium and large size people too.

2+ Bedroom, 1 Bath – Carriage House $950

We say 2+ because the upstairs has one big bedroom which is divided into two spaces (so it functions like 2 bedrooms) but it’s officially only one bedroom (we checked).

4 Bedroom, 1 Bath – Upper Unit $1200

This one is two levels! The lower part has 2 bedrooms (one has a HUGE closet) the kitchen, living room, & bathroom. Above that is a finished attic with two more bedrooms and a bonus living room.

Ok that’s all – and if you don’t know anyone who’s looking, you could at least do me a solid and post a link somewhere on your interwebspace so that your e-friends can come find out about our awesome northeast apartment.

Amy and Adam inspired me to do my own “Visited States” map – and I had the opposite reaction as Adam did after seeing my map – this is much more impressive than I thought it would be!

In full discosure, some of these states (Kansas, Indiana, Wyoming, New Mexico, a couple more) were basically just states I drove through on my way to somewhere else, but still–I’m pretty lucky to have seen a good chunk of this country.  Now I really feel like I need to fill in some of these gaps!

PS – I might have gone through Maryland when I visited D.C. but I can’t remember, so I’m keeping it off

I’ve always said…that if I were to publish a book, I would publish it as “C. Lawton Key” because I think that sounds much more smartie-pants than “Craig Key.”  I could go for the full thing “Craig Lawton Key,” but that makes me feel like I’m in trouble or something [in a mother's yelling voice] “CRAIG LAWTON KEY!”

While rambling through flickr this morning I saw a promotion for Blurb.com – “Real Books Made By You”.   I love finding new companies online that make me go “wow–I want that!” and this is definitely one of them!  High quality books that look great (at least on their site they do), at decent prices (low end about $13–high end about $60).  My friends are wedding photographers, I wonder if they know about it yet?

Anyway, until now I hadn’t given much thought to what I would write about…because I thought I would need to be all kinds of expert on one subject, or another (which, FYI: I am not).  But now it seems, that just like other media outlets which allow untalented nobodies to publish their content to the world, we nobodies now have a book publishing platform too!  I really have no idea what the book will be about… the production music biz?  My never ending struggle to conquer google?  Maybe I’ll condense my anatomy of the relationship between the church and the arts?

It really made me want to think of something intelligent and say it.  So I have decided to take pre-orders now!  Who wants to read my not-yet-existent, not-yet-topical, possibly mediocre book?  And guess what…if I get 10 (count ‘em) orders, I will pay for half your book– (I think I’ll go for the standard landscape model with a dust cover), so it will cost us each $15.  I will promise to work hard on it, and say something that I think is really important…even though I don’t know what that is yet.

Here’s a little fun for a Friday time waster…  Check out wordle.

In goes your website, blog, whatev…and out comes:

Yep the thuper-thmart wordle bots scan your site and grab all the words that are used the most and puts them in a nice cloud-like picture (does anyone else think it’s funny that “narcissist” made my list?).

So go on and play around!  I wonder what rockworms would look like…probably mostly swear words and “ADAM” and stuff.

They are calling it out as a viral ad campaign from Nike (which–I would say is pretty likely, considering the nicely cropped zoom in shot of the cool shoes with the swoosh logo about 40 seconds in), which apparantly means it has no value.

Seriously?  So would you rather watch :30 second advertisements that tell you why you should buy a product?  Come on…none of us like slick sales pitches (as our friend at Naked Religion pointed out this morning), and I for one enjoy watching cool videos online.  If those cool videos happen to have been created and paid for by a brand, that will actually make me like that brand more!

Another example is this video which is rumored to be a Gatorade ad:

In this case, it seems doubtful that it’s a Gatorade ad–I don’t see any branding, links, or anything else that would lead me to believe it’s from them.  But even if it is, I don’t care.  I don’t care if it’s an ad for Schlitz Malt Liquor–I still think it’s awesome!  And next time I’m in the mood for a beverage, I would be more likely to reach for the brand that made this video than the one that didn’t.  Seriously.  I would.

It’s dangerous (or stupid?) to open up to comments on a blog that no one reads, but what do you think?  Do me a favor and link to some of your favorite viral videos ever in the comments–and you get bonus points if you can prove they were sponsored by a brand.

Half of you (which would be 2 of you) don’t know what that means…but I just found a post about using SEO (search engine optimization) powers for good, and I thought it was a pretty sweet idea.  So here is the deal:

If you post a link to a site, you have to have “anchor” text–this is the text that you actually click on.  For instance: really awesome guy.  You’ll notice that clicking on the text “really awesome guy” takes you right back to my homepage–which is probably where you were anyway.

One of the ways that search engines bots try to figure out what sites are about is by looking at the anchor text from links going to that site…so I just gave google a clue, that craigsanatomy.com is about “really awesome guy.” (I will laugh so hard if I end up ranking for that search term).

OK…enough with the lesson, what Stephan Spencer was suggesting in the above mentioned blog post was that we get the site freetibet.org, ranking high for the keyword “olympics.”  How do we do it?  I just did it.  We put links to that site using the word olympics.

So how do you do that?  If you have a blog, try adding it to your blogroll (see the link on mine to the right?).  You are probably using some sort of editor which lets you make links (the button on mine looks like three chain links–”linked” together).  But if you are not, you can copy and paste this html code into your site (this is handy for myspace, and other sites that don’t have html formatting helpers).
